If I had to take a wild guess, I would say that this was acting like series of API calls shouldn't execute quickly and eventually timed out. After the "Suspected RCE Region Protection Message", the output log shows a lot of what looks like error messages. Libdvdread: This can take a _long_ time, please be patientĢ. After a couple of minutes it started to play the dvd. I was able to open the disc and now the disc is spinning for minutes now. I suspected that perhaps the log file not being writeable may have caused an issue given the log says it is not writeable - so I changed the permissions to writeable (in c:\program files\VideoLan\VLC, I ran attrib -r vlc-log.txt) The directory where you installed VLC and run "vlc -I qt" Ibdvdnav: vm: failed to read VIDEO_TS.IFOĠ000000003983b78] main input error: open of `dvd:///D:/' failedĠ000000003a145b8] logger interface: VLC media player - 2.0.6 TwoflowerĠ000000003a145b8] logger interface: Copyright c 1996-2013 VLC authors and VideoĪrning: if you cannot access the GUI anymore, open a command-line window, go to Ibdvdnav:DVDOpenFileUDF:UDFFindFile /VIDEO_TS/VIDEO_TS.BUP failed Ibdvdnav:DVDOpenFileUDF:UDFFindFile /VIDEO_TS/VIDEO_TS.IFO failed Ibdvdread: Using libdvdcss version 1.2.13 for DVD access

Here's what I got from the View | Add Interface | Debug Logging output. So I don't think this is a question of Windows File system not being able to detect the disc. When I look at the disc with Explorer I can see all the files that I expect - audio and video directories, etc. I can sometimes get dvds to play back if I do the following:ģ Wait for the disc to stop spinning (presumably allowing the Windows File System to do what it does when a disc is first inserted) I'm familiar with DOS and logging tools and tracking down bugs. I'm happy to reproduce the bug and run any logging anybody wants me to do to help track this down. I've rebooted my machine probably 10 - 20 times since this happened so it's not a question of needing to reboot to fix things. However, now it doesn't crash and most of the time it didn't. After that, I had a few crashes of VLC media player (I allowed it to send crash reports). What happened after the fresh install, I could get DVDs to play back ok by selecting File | Open Disc and pressing play. When I got a new hard drive and re-installed the OS I had the same symptoms. Most of the time this was on the x86/32 bit version, though I did try the 圆4 version (which I think is in beta) and got the same result.
Note that I just upgraded to 2.0.6 and it didn't fix the problem. When I upgraded to Windows 8, I ran into problems (Enterprise, 64 bit). My machines in a Lenovo W520 and I had 0 problems playing DVDs back when I was running Windows 7. I'm having the same issue MOST of the time - horrible experience.
